Company Review: Jott

Have u heard of Jott?. This web 2.0 company provides a cool service of converting voice messages to text which is then sent to you by sms or e-mail. The duration of the voice message is currently limited to 30sec. Question is will this fly?

Some key considerations here :

Target market:
The company claims that most people on the move with no time to 'jot' things find this service super useful. Question is how big is this market? Also is it convenient enough to get them to switch from scribbling it down on paper or putting it on their treos, blackberries, outlook?

Privacy:
Considering the service converts voice to text and Jott currently uses cheap transcription labor (out of India i guess), not sure how many people will find that comforting. They do promise anonymity, but can you take their word for it? Also if the message was a brilliant idea, phone number, secret code who would want to use Jott for that?

Revenue:
Jott plans to employ the web 2.0 fav advertising model at this point in time. They will move to a premium model once they have found that niche. Not sure if the 'niche' will generate BIG bucks to keep their investors interested.

Thinking through the idea, Jott gets my vote for innovation and coolness. However like 99% of all silicon valley start-ups, their challenge will be to convert that hype to $$$ and i'm not so sure if the idea is good enough to be part of the '1%'.

A series of nasty winter storm systems affected a large portion of the United States this week. Heavy snow, ice, sleet and flooding rainfall affected the southern Plains, Mississippi Valley and Northeast. Hundreds of thousands of utility customers lost power. Seventy storm-related fatalities were reported in ten states. California’s citrus industry is reeling after a cold air mass killed about 70% of its crop, resulting in damages of approximately $1 billion.

On Thursday and Friday, northern Europe was affected by the worst wind storm it has experienced in years. Winds gusting over 100 mph (160 kph) affected the United Kingdom, northern France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic. Damage to roofs, windows and electricity infrastructure is widespread across the region. At least 46 people were killed due to falling trees, flying debris, collapsed walls and vehicle accidents.

Last weekend, a strong mid-latitude storm system produced damaging winds over Scandinavia. More than 200,000 people lost power in Sweden and five fatalities were reported due to falling trees.

WATER
Eighteen people were killed late last week in Sri Lanka due to flooding and mudslides. An estimated 1,600 homes were damaged or destroyed and more than 85,000 people were affected.

FIRE
Wildfires continued to thrive in parts of southern Australia this week amid scorching heat, dry surface conditions and gusty winds. Nine homes were consumed and one fatality resulted.

What does Sanjeev Kapoor, Keith Floyd & Martin Yan have in common?

They are all BIG LIAR's. Have you ever seen either of them ever say - "This meal stinks" or something more mild like "a little more salt/pepper" will make this dish taste delicious". All i've heard them say after they cook the meal is " This tastes perfect". Its like they always get their receipt on spot all the damn time.

I have tasted my mum and wife's (order of the names don't mean to suggest anything) cooking and I must admit that they are brilliant cooks. But everything they cook the same dish, it tastes slightly different and more often than not, a little more chilli/pepper/salt/tobasco will make the already brilliant tasting dish melt in your mouth.

All i'm trying to say is, that one always needs to take what's said on tv with a pinch of 'salt'.

Think Flat - This is what Infy calls it blog. For some reason the PR guys at Infosys believe that the word “ThinkFlat” will direct a human beings mind to Thomas Friedman’s bestseller “The World is Flat”(and I believe that was what was intended). Seriously, what’s up with the marketing department? Don’t they get the negative connotation of “Think - FLAT”? Seriously do you think people are going to be reading why Infosys used the term ThinkFlat. Just ask yourself what you think of when you hear the word ‘flat’. How about - deflated, bland, deficient, lacking, lowered, shallow ……For god's sake, Infy is from the pub city of India, haven't they heard of a flat beer? And they think they have gotten their web2.0 game up and running with a corporate blog. It's sad to see how great Indian company can screw up in an area as basic as marketing communication.

I guess this explains why comparing an Indian technology firm with its American counterpart on the marketing front can never be Apple to Apple. You know what I mean ;)

April 2: Thaksin claims victory with 57% votes in an uncontested election. People are going nuts. Thailand is on fire.

April 5: King Bhumibol Adulyadej's steps in, advises the courts to rule the election as unlawful. Thaksin steps down. Hands reigns over to a temp PM. Announces that he will not talk part in active polictics anymore.

Apr - May: People are happy. Emotions subside. Enjoy their holiday and victory.

May 23rd: Taksin is back to head of the Cabinet.

10:00 AM: Wake Up

12:30 PM: Watched Spurs play the Mavs. The Mavs had a chance to close the Spurs out. But Duncan and his crew held on for the final show down in down town San Antonio.

2:30 PM: Watched 36 Chinatown. Movie sucks. It was bound to, considering the director casted Isha Koppikar as a depressed mother's who is fully claded. What a waste of talent ;)

5:00 PM: Nivs headin out to Mudimalai with some friends from Mumbai. Plan was made overnite, I was informed now. Ain't she adventurous.

6:00 PM: Wine and Dine @ Mei Lengs in Neptune court. Very nice n warm place(sea view), homely food, red wine and lots of cake and apple strudel. Made me want to have my own family. Good catching up with my buddies from b-school. Jean you got a very cuddly bundle of joy, and naming him 'Ethan' sure will make him accomplish Mission Impossible ;)

8:00 PM: Belated b'day cake and song @ Mei Lengs. Olivier and Wan Yen suprise me with a birthday cake. I listen to the tune that reminds me that I have one year less to live and i'm still miles away from achieving my goals. Thank you guys !!!

10:30 PM: Arrive @ Santy's place. Its the bro's birthday celebration. Cheers to one more year closer to death!!!

11:00 PM: Eat Andra chicken, courtesy Ms.Sush. She supised me with her succulently cooked Andra style chicken. Way to go Sush.

12:45 AM: Antakshari in the house. G gives a brilliant idea of playing the most 'musical' game in Indian history. Its George, Abhi, Santy and Me vs Akshat, Bean, Sush, Bhargav, Sibi and Ram. All the boys impress. Some dancing happens. As usual our musical mestro Abhi the Mitun Chakrobarthy aficionado mesmerises us with his vocals.

1:00 AM: Security guard comes knocking. G greets him with "CYHDP". Dude's warning us that the neighbours are complaining and we need to keep it down. Yeah like thats goona happen.

1:00 AM: More Absolut. At this time Ramya, one of my closest friend's calls me. She is apologising for forgetting my birthday. Twice in a row. Hey did I say "Ramya was one of my closest friend" ;). I forgive you Rammu.

2:30 AM: Watch IND vs WI. WI was 199 all out. Our Indian brothers are on a high. With 17 wins batting 2nd on the trot it was making for an easy victory. But the 1 run defeat did shock us all. I sure hope the S-curve for Indian cricket works to our favour in the worldcup.

3:30 AM: Sang to Pal & Mudi over yahoo. Now can I help it, being in an intoxicated state trying to make some conversation your always bound to hit a high note. But the funniest thing about this conversation was when I learn Mudi was going for aerobics to get a six pack ;), way to go you pondati.

I have the worst fever ever. My head was like literally on fire. The worst thing was that I could not get any damn sleep all nite and felt as dilusional and Mick Jagger on stage. Something you must know about me is that when ever I have to deal with a serious issue, I go and hit the bed and strangely when I wake up, its a better day already. And amazingling the guys at Harvard Medical School have data to prove that sleeping/dreaming can be an effective way to resolve issues.

I went to work this morning only to return. Doc has given me like loads of steriods to pop to keep me alive. I feel so wasted. The only thing keeping me going is Clapton and his Chronicles. He sure is one GOD you can never get enough. I only wish I could say "Yes I feel Wonderful tonight" ....

This picture best describes how I feel today. I'm up against the wall and I just feel I can't do a thing to improve the situation but wait. Its all hazy and blur. Life sux when you loose control when in cruise control.

The guys in the pictures have had the greatest influence on me between 1997 - 2001. They are 'Smart', 'Funny' and the most 'Warm' guys i have met (hey i don't mean Brokeback Mountain).

This picture goes back to early 2002 when all the boys landed jobs after college (the infy guys were still on the bench) and found a new passion for Smirnoff @ Nairs koromangala apartment. It brings back memories of mid-night masala on vijaya tv, relationships with women, drunkin advice we had for each other about women, the freakin knock knock jokes and the countless cigarettes teju, sandy and dhimant puffed on before the early morning haze awoke us to a head-splitting hangover.

Now that we are all over the place, I sure hope that in the near future we can all re-live one of the most cherised( i mean drunken) moments of our lives.

You guys are the best !!!

Rational Human beings - Oxymoron?

I visited the Changi air show a couple of weeks ago to re-live my fantasy to fly man's greatest creation at 2.5 mach’s. The planes on display included the F-16C Falcon, F15C- Eagle, T-6B, Heron 1, PC-2, Airbus A380. However this spread does not even come close to the air show held in Bangalore.

As usual there were hoards of people, queuing up for hours to catch a glimpse of their fav fighters in action, to get a pic of the latest killer machine on display and to get an update on the latest in missile technology.

As I watched my fellow human beings, the following thought occurred to me: Why do we as human beings get excited by machines that have been built to destroy us?

As a "rational" creature, some of the "rational" answers i had were:

It must be because we find safety in the fact that these machines are out there to protect us if needed OR
It will never be used against us as it has not been used for decades OR
I am not sensitive to the fact that these machines can destroy all one's got as I have never experienced its destructive power OR
Its just cool to go watch the adreline pumping fighter jets in action OR
We can go check out the hot chicks at the show and maybe get lucky OR etc,etc

I'm sure there are a million other "rational" reasons why we go to the shows, but what ever they maybe, it appears to me that a rational decision is only as rational as the decision maker.

State of PMO

Today I realized that I’m working with a bunch of people who really do not think through things in entirety. Take a credit-payment option were looking into. We had a solutions provider drop by to brief us on the product their offering. We discussed it for a while and the decision maker was like “ Ok lets go for this”. I kinda freaked and asked him about user adoption especially considering that we have multiple channels that will use this stuff, and all I got was they will adopt, it seems to me like a decent option.

Sheesh today I know for a fact that the PMO office is run by a lazy set of self centered idelo-sapiens, and if it wasn't for my boss I would have quit this place long ago!!!

Thinking about life has led me to belive that the statement "I don't know what I want in life" does not hold true. The way i look at it is that in life one has a lot of choices to make. And logically one always makes his best choice and the reason they choose to do something is because it will get them to what they really want. So i conclude that people do know what they want and hence the statement "I don;t know what i want in life" does not hold.

So what are u pretending not to know !!!
